Biography

Richard was born in Nashville, Tennessee, where he currently resides and works. He trained at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy from 2008 to 2011, after which he stayed on as an instructor, teaching drawing, painting, and anatomy. He held various roles at the academy through 2025, such as Director of Anatomy and the program director of their MA in Studio Art program. In recent years, he has also taught with esteemed artist and author Juliette Aristides through her online program, the Aristides Atelier.

Richard currently maintains a studio in Nashville with his wife and fellow painter, Marty Welsh. He divides his time between painting commissions and working on his own projects. Richard’s commission work encompasses a range of genres, primarily in oil, including portraiture, landscape, still life, and equine art.

Richard believes strongly in the significance of art-making as an introspective act, through which the artist is able to grow and improve him or herself not only as an artist, but as a person. For him, art is the means through which we can contemplate, and celebrate, the great mystery of existence.

Richard has exhibited his work throughout the U.S. and Europe, and his work has been collected internationally.
